BP oil leak victims face strings on $20bn spill fund – Telegraph

BP strikes again, demanding that victims of their oil spill give up their rights in order to receive payments from the fund set up to compensate the victims of the largest oil spill in U.S. history.  If you take money from the BP fund now, you can never sue BP for damages caused by their Gulf Coast oil spill.  Thank you President Obama.

Now we all no that BP is no lover of constitutional rights, but the U.S. government?  Didn’t President Obama play a key role in setting up this fund?  Maybe that’s why he’s vacationing on the Northeast beaches instead of down South.

Teens and CW Stars Helping in the Gulf Coast Oil Spill

CW Stars Helping in the Coast - Zap2it

I have heard many references to the younger generation and their willingness to volunteer.  America’s teens possess unbridled passion and energy.  In addition they can utilize technology in a far more effective way than their parents’ generation.

So I did a little digging, and here is what I found.  According to a 2005  survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Corporation for National and Community Service, 55% of young people ages 12-18 volunteer their time for a cause.  That is almost double the adult volunteer rate of only 29%.

Birds threatened in the Gulf

Over 100 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt created his second Federal Bird Reservation, which eventually became the Breton National Wildlife Refuge.

Roosevelt was an active outdoorsman and he wanted to preserve our natural resources for future generations.  When his successor, William Taft, allowed federal lands to be leased to private oil companies, the former President Roosevelt was so outraged that he formed a third party to challenge Taft in the next election.

More Bureaucracy in Wake of BP Oil Spill

Soldiers in the War On Oil

Soldiers in the War On Oil

As the old saying goes, be careful what you ask for.

In response to the Gulf Coast oil spill, our government has reacted as a true political body.  They have created a new layer of bureaucrats in charge of regulating the exploitation of our nation’s natural resources while maintaining a safe environment for our citizens.

According to the New York Times, this agency will be like a phoenix, rising out of the ashes of the old Minerals Management Service.  In fact, the old single department will be replaced by three more departments. Now that’s getting your tax dollars’ worth!

The Second Harvest Food Bank has been in the front lines offering relief in response to the BP oil spill.  For 28 years this organization has been fighting hunger in southern Louisiana.  Their mission is accomplished by warehousing food donations from the community and then distributing that food through their network of faith-based and nonprofit partners.

Already burdened by Hurricane Katrinia and the current recession, Second Harvest  has expanded their efforts to include the victims of the BP oil spill.

Panel Meeting To Aid Fla. Businesses Hurt By Oil – cbs4.com

Floridians Prepare for the Oil

Florida Bracing for BP's Oil Spill

It looks like Florida is being proactive about the oil spill that is reaching their shores.  Not the usual actions you would expect from politicians.

Florida has assembled a panel of government officials and private citizens, which has put forth an interesting concept.  Get a bunch of money, a billion or so, from BP upfront.  Then the state can allocate these resources as needed.

I’m no believer in efficient government, but judging from the past actions of BP (see post) this might be a good idea.  Since BP usually skirts its responsibilities and has created a despicable trail of indictments, small payoffs, and Congressional investigations, Florida may be on to something.

Fishermen and Others Turn to Charities for Aid

Fishermen Turn to Charity

Gulf Fishermen Turn to Charities

So soon after Katrina, our Gulf Coast residents find themselves turning to charity in order to survive.  But an alarming trend highlighted in this article is the relatively small amount of donations that have reached the coast.

I know that some people consider this BP’s problem, so they are not as motivated to help the victims of the oil spill.  But as we have seen in past disasters, big business usually finds a way to shirk their greater responsibilities.  Remember Exxon’s statement of innocence  about the sustained environmental damage to the Alaskan coast?  (see post)
