So as BP heroically caps its massively profitable and irrevocably damaging well in the Gulf Coast, many people may begin to question their negative views of the oil giant.
Well Hillary Clinton and the BBC are not forgetting a rather ugly episode from the recent past. According to this article from the BBC, BP actually admits that it pressured the British Government to push for the release of convicted terrorist Addelbaset al-Megrahi, otherwise known as the Lockerbie Bomber.
“BP confirmed it did press for a PTA (Prisoner Transfer Agreement) because it was aware that a delay might have ‘negative consequences’ for UK commercial interests.”
Wow. BP definitely has no problem showing its true colors. But that doesn’t seem to matter, as BP loves to remind us all that their money is used for good sometimes. Do you remember the defense used in response to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill? BP reminded all of us that their dividends support millions of pensioners, “small people”, across the U.S. and Great Britain.
And apparently that line of reasoning also goes for supporting terrorists. If the UK (read BP) stands to lose enough money, then it doesn’t really matter if the government follows its obligation to provide security for the people. If you have a $900,000 deal on the line for a private company, then it’s OK for politicians to release a convicted murderer to sweeten the deal.
And I bet that BP reminded the citizens of Britain that BP dividends pay for their pensions. So even though this guy may have killed some “small people” it’s OK because BP gives a whole bunch of money to a whole bunch of other “small people”.
Come on! I’ve heard this line of reasoning before. Any time there is enough money on the line, moral corners get cut and basic humanity is lost. Remember that Twilight Zone episode? The one where that guy is given a button to push? If he pushes the button an unnamed person will die, but the button-pusher will get $1,000,000.
I bet that was part of the interview for BP executives. If you want to be an executive for BP, you have to push this button and kill someone. But don’t worry: You’ll make lots of money if you do it. How would that job description read?
Are you a true sociopath that wants to earn millions of dollars and has no problem killing “small people”? Do you support terrorists if the price is right? Then we have the job for you! Work at BP and you will find your place!
We should never entertain the idea of defending BP. Yes they have capped the oil spill…seventy-some days later. But they are still making billions of dollars while the residents of the Gulf suffer. I don’t care if they spread their blood money around to the peasants. They are an amoral profit machine that will stop at nothing in the pursuit of money.
And their support for the release of convicted terrorist Abdelbaset al-Mgrahi is a vivid example that should not be forgotten.

It’s dumbfounding that it took them so long to make the headway they have. BP you’re really shown how your company is run. It is really hard to believe how a major cooperation like BP could be so incompetent. They have been doing this for over a 100 years! We really do give companies like them far too much credit. So sad. The saddest part of the whole situation is that many people have lost their livelihood. BP will go on, this won’t slow them down that much. But what about the small local businesses? They won’t see much of the money BP has to pay.
